- Dana I'd like us to try meeting-free mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yesterday I had four short calls, and by lunch I'd barely started the report. None of the calls was pointless on its own, but together they broke the morning into pieces.
- Marcus I see the problem, though blocking everyone's calendar sounds rather tidy from the perspective of someone who doesn't answer customer calls. Our support team can't tell a client to have a problem after lunch.
- Dana Fair point. I'm talking about internal meetings, not customer calls. Support would still need cover. We could use a rotation so that one person handles urgent requests while the others have a quiet period.
- Marcus Provided the same person doesn't always get the interruptions. And what happens when an internal decision really can't wait? Last month we had to fix an incorrect price before the website went live.
- Dana We should allow exceptions for urgent problems like that. But a weekly progress update isn't an emergency just because someone puts a red flag on the invitation. People could post routine updates in the shared document and discuss only the points that need a decision.
- Marcus That might work. My worry is that we'll remove a thirty-minute meeting and replace it with forty messages that everyone feels obliged to answer immediately. A quiet calendar isn't much use if the chat window keeps flashing.
- Dana Then we need an agreement that routine messages can wait until lunch. For genuinely urgent issues, call the person on duty. Let's run a six-week trial. Actually, make that eight weeks, since the first two include the product launch and won't reflect normal working conditions.
- Marcus All right, as long as we review both sides. I'd want to know whether response times for customers get worse, as well as whether people finish their planned work. Just asking if everyone enjoyed fewer meetings won't tell us enough.
- Dana Agreed. We can compare response times and ask staff about completed tasks. No monitoring which apps people have open. If the results are mixed, we can adjust the arrangement rather than declare it a success or failure immediately.
- Marcus With those conditions, I'm willing to try it. Let's write down the exceptions before we announce anything.
