Explicación

Wish, if only y would rather usan formas de pasado para expresar distancia respecto a la realidad. Ese pasado gramatical no siempre sitúa el deseo en un momento anterior: puede referirse al presente o al futuro.

Wish e if only: una realidad diferente

Significado Forma Ejemplo
Deseo sobre el presente wish / if only + past simple I wish I understood the rules.
Capacidad o posibilidad deseada wish / if only + could + infinitivo If only we could extend the deadline.
Arrepentimiento pasado wish / if only + past perfect I wish I had kept the original receipt.

If only suele expresar un deseo más intenso: If only the evidence were clearer! Con be, were es habitual en el registro formal con cualquier persona; was también se utiliza con sujetos singulares en un estilo menos formal.

  • I wish I didn’t have to commute so far. (actualmente tengo que hacerlo)
  • I wish I hadn’t agreed to those conditions. (ya acepté y me arrepiento)

Wish + would: cambios deseados y quejas

Usamos would + infinitivo para un comportamiento o un cambio que queremos que ocurra, a menudo porque alguien no coopera.

  • I wish the committee would publish its criteria.
  • I wish you wouldn’t leave the microphone on.

No es la elección normal para describir un estado presente ni una capacidad propia: I wish I knew more; I wish I could swim. Para una esperanza que consideramos posible, suele corresponder hope: I hope the committee publishes the results soon.

Would rather: quién realiza la acción

Sujetos Tiempo de referencia Estructura
Mismo sujeto Presente o futuro would rather + infinitivo sin to
Mismo sujeto Pasado would rather have + participio
Sujetos distintos Presente o futuro would rather + sujeto + past simple
Sujetos distintos Pasado would rather + sujeto + past perfect
  • I’d rather wait than accept an unfair offer.
  • I’d rather have waited. (habría preferido esperar yo)
  • I’d rather you waited until Monday. (prefiero que esperes tú)
  • I’d rather you had waited. (habría preferido que hubieras esperado)

La negativa sigue la estructura: I’d rather not discuss it frente a I’d rather you didn’t discuss it. I’d significa I would en estas preferencias.

Truco: en I’d rather you came, came puede referirse a mañana: el pasado marca distancia, no una fecha anterior. En cambio, I’d rather you had come expresa una preferencia sobre algo que ya ocurrió.
