The Yellow Envelope
On Tuesday afternoon, Mina was cleaning the tables at her uncle's bakery when she found a yellow envelope under a chair. There was no name on it. Inside were two tickets for a play that evening and a photograph of a white dog.
Mina wanted to find the owner before the bakery closed at six. She asked the other workers, but nobody knew anything. Then she remembered a woman with a white dog outside the shop that morning. The woman had bought bread and asked for directions to the flower shop.
Mina phoned the flower shop. Its owner, Ravi, knew the woman: she was his new neighbour, Mrs Dale. He offered to take a message to her because he was going home soon.
At half past five, Mrs Dale arrived at the bakery. The tickets were a birthday present for her brother. The photograph was for a neighbour who wanted to paint a picture of her dog.
Mrs Dale thanked Mina and bought a bag of biscuits. She gave them to the bakery workers. Mina smiled. She couldn't go to the theatre that night, but sharing biscuits with everyone was a lovely end to her working day.
